No satellite positioning planning required
It is no longer necessary for the measurement vehicle to travel in accordance with satellite flyovers, so the time of day for travel is not selected. Therefore, there is no need for “planning” to determine the day and time of measurement to coincide with satellites flyovers.

Longitudinal gradients can also be measured
By combining elevation and stereo camera measurements, it is possible to measure longitudinal and transverse gradients of road surfaces. This is expected to be useful in disaster recovery.

Accurate position synchronization of road surface elements
Synchronized measurement of the elements of road surface properties with high-precision position information using satellites enables more efficient mapping with distance markers and creation of reports.

The impetus for the development
One of Union Tool's strengths in ultra-precise drills for printed circuit boards is the in-house production of manufacturing equipment. High-quality drills are born from the development of high-precision measuring instruments. We were approached to see if we could utilize this technological capability in the development of a new road surface texture measuring vehicle. At first, I was uneasy because I had no experience at all with the nature and scale of objects to be measured. However, I decided to take on this challenge because my customers expected me to have a new perspective unique to a different industry, and I wanted to contribute to the maintenance of social infrastructure.

Development challenges
It is not easy to accurately determine where on the road surface all the cameras and sensors measured while traveling at speeds of 120 km/h, and a lot of ingenuity went into the development of the system. We conducted a number of experiments on actual highways to see if such innovations worked well. Since we did not want to inconvenience the general public, our experiments were subject to various restrictions and often lasted until late at night. Despite these restrictions, we were able to overcome the problems found in each experiment and put the system into practical use.
